Limestone Restoration, Care, Maintenance & Sealing

Limestone is a sedimentary rock formed from calcareous remains of plants and animals or precipitated from solution. Often contains remains and fossils of sea creatures. It is natural Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) and will yield lime when heated. Does not show much gaining or crystalline structure. It has a smooth granular surface. Varies in hardness. Some dense limestone can be polished – will never be as shiny as marble or granite! Color tones are typically neutral.

Many older buildings have durable limestone flooring. This is the chalky porous type typical of most French and Spanish limestone. Etched by acids, including soft drinks. Absorbs oils and other liquids and is more easily stained than marble. Composed of Calcite and some Magnesium. Color tones are typically neutral. Limestone is becoming more popular than marble and is usuallyhoned (not shiny). Has a smooth granular surface. Varies in hardness.

Limestone and marble are very reactive to acid solutions, making acid rain a significant problem. Many limestone statues and building surfaces have suffered severe damage due to acid rain. Acid-based cleaning chemicals can also etch limestone, which should only be cleaned with a neutral or mild alkaline-based cleaner.

Limestone is more porous, softer, and chemically sensitive than marble or granite. Etched by acids, including soft drinks and juice. Absorbs oils and other liquids and is easily stained. So putting limestone in a kitchen or heavily used bathroom is not a good idea.

Should be sealed with a penetrating sealer to prevent staining and reduce soiling. Should only be cleaned with neutral pH detergents. Because it is soft, it should never be cleaned at pressures above 800 PSI and then only if the grout is in good condition.

Will never have the gloss of marble or granite.

Marble Care, Maintenance, Cleaning, Restoration & Sealing

Marble is a “relative” of limestone, having been derived from that particular stone, and having undergone further development while deep in the earth over the course of millions of years. Marble is a metamorphic rock, having been subject to tremendous heat and pressure to the point where various fossilized materials, along with the original limestone and sundry minerals, have become re-crystallized. This process changes the rock from limestone to what we would recognize as marble. This naturally decorative material is characterized by vein-like patterns which vary depending on which minerals, and which quantities of those minerals, were present during the re-crystallization of the original limestone parent rock. These patterns offer the unique appearance known to many, as well as the rich range of colors that are some of the most vibrant available in any natural stone.

Available in a wide range of colors, marble is often used for its beauty, but is more porous, softer, and chemically sensitive than granite. Marble surfaces show wear sooner than granite, but can be restored with honing and polishing more easily. Etched by acids, including soft drinks and juice. Absorbs oils and other liquids and is easily stained. So putting marble in a kitchen or heavily used bathroom is not a good idea. Best use of marble is for powder baths, table tops, tub surrounds, a marble shower, floor tile and stone fireplace surrounds.

Composed of Calcite and Calcium Carbonate. Should be sealed with a penetrating sealer such as BulletProof™ or Impregnator Pro to prevent staining and reduce soiling. Should only be cleaned with neutral pH detergents such as Revitalizer™ or Stone & Tile Cleaner. Because it is soft, it should never be cleaned at pressures above 800 PSI and then only if the grout is in good condition.

Note that almost all Green Marble is actually Serpentine, not Marble. Black Granite is generally Basalt and is charged a higher import duty.

Marble ranges from 1 to 4 on the MOH scale (a scale for determining the relative hardness of a mineral according to its resistance to scratching). The hardest mineral, at 10, is diamond. The softest mineral, at 1, is talc (baby powder).

Black Marble, such as Negro Marquina, is a very soft limestone often mistaken as a marble. Not recommended for interior flooring. Never use a crystallizer on black marble – The stone will blister or spall! If honing or polishing, use extreme care not to leave swirls and do not run until the powder has dried. Check frequently – polishes very quickly!

If you would like to test your floor or sample of Absolute Black Granite you can use both StoneTech™ Professional Restore™ and StoneTech™ Professional KlenzAll™ as testing liquids. We recommend you apply each of these cleaners in separate inconspicuous areas, let them stand for 30 minutes, rinse the surface and allow to dry. If the surface turns light gray you should avoid purchasing or using the material.

Travertine Floor Cleaning Services in Orange County CA

Travertine, a type of limestone, can be left in its natural state, with no polishing. Travertine is a sedimentary rock formed from calcareous remains of plants and animals or precipitated from solution. It is natural Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) and will yield lime when heated. Varies in hardness. Etched by acids. Porous with many visible holes, often filled with epoxy. Polishing powders tend to accumulate in the holes and can make clean-up difficult. Because it is soft and has epoxy-filled holes, it should never be cleaned at pressures above 800 PSI and then only if the grout and the epoxy filling are in good condition.

Travertine is one of several natural stones that are used for paving patios and garden paths. It is sometimes known as travertine limestone and as travertine marble. The stone is characterised by pitted holes and troughs in its surface. It comes in a variety of colors from grey to coral-red. Travertine is most commonly available in tile sizes for floor installations.

Travertine is etched by acids, including soft drinks and juice. Acid-based cleaning chemicals can also etch. Absorbs oils and other liquids and is more easily stained than marble. Therefore, putting Travertine in a kitchen or heavily used bathroom is not a good idea. Travertine should only be cleaned with a neutral or mild alkaline-based cleaner.

Travertine can be used for countertops but it’s not recommended. It is easy to scratch and etch. It works well for flooring, accessories and smaller spaces. This stone seems to open up small areas and makes them feel more spacious and airy. The surface finishes for travertine stone vary. Not all travertine are capable of the polished high gloss finish – only the harder types. This stone will never achieve the same glossy finish as marble. and granite will.

Travertine can have four major finishes: polished (shiny), honed (matte), brushed and tumbled (textured surfaces). The type of finish given to the travertine will determine how shiny the surface will be. The most common finish for travertine is honed.

Porcelain Tile: Cleaning, Maintenance, Protection and Sealing

Most types of tiles that are made from clay or a mixture of clay and other materials and then kiln-fired, are considered to be a part of the larger classification called “Ceramic Tiles”. These tiles can be split into two groups, porcelain tiles and non-porcelain tiles. These non-porcelain tiles are frequently referred to as ceramic tiles by themselves, separate from porcelain tiles – confusing!

Non-porcelain ceramic tiles are generally made from red or white clay fired in a kiln. They are almost always finished with a durable glaze, which carries the color and pattern. These tiles are used in both wall and floor applications. Non-porcelain ceramic tiles are usually suitable for very light to moderate traffic and generally have a relatively high water absorption rating making them less frost resistant and they are more prone to wear and chipping than porcelain tiles. Porcelain tile is more scratch resistant than ceramic tile. Also, porcelain tile is fired at higher temperatures than ceramic, resulting in superior durability and stain resistance.

Porcelain unglazed tile is generally made by the dust pressed method from porcelain clays which result in a tile that is dense, impervious, fine grained and smooth, with a sharply formed face. Porcelain tiles usually have a much lower water absorption rate (less than 0.5%) than non-porcelain ceramic tiles making them frost resistant. Full body porcelain tiles carry the color and pattern through the entire thickness of the tile making them virtually impervious to wear and are suitable for any application from residential to the highest traffic commercial or industrial applications. Because porcelain tile is fire-hardened and quite hard, it can be cleaned at pressures up to 1,450 PSI if the grout is in good condition.

Porcelain unglazed tiles are similar to glazed tile, except that their surface is not coated. Full-body porcelain unglazed tiles do not show wear because their color extends throughout the tile, making them ideal for commercial applications.

Sealing Ceramic and Porcelain Tile & Grout

Glazed tiles are coated with a liquid glass, which is then baked into the surface of the clay. The glaze provides an unlimited array of colors and designs as well as protects the tile from staining. A glazed tile is already stain proof, so there is no purpose to putting on a sealer. However, the grout joint between the tiles is usually very porous and generally made of a cement-based material. Therefore, grout joints typically will need to be sealed and maintained properly to prevent stains and discoloration. Impregnating sealers such as All-Purpose Grout Sealer go into the grout joint and protect against water and oil-based stains. Most industry professionals recognize that grout is best protected with a fluorochemical-based sealer, such as Impregnator Pro or All-Purpose Grout Sealer. If the grout joint is epoxy, a sealer is not necessary.

What is the Best Way to Clean Your Ceramic Tile Floors?

Besides their phenomenal beauty and versatility, porcelain tile floors have the advantage of being very low-maintenance. Ceramics are made of natural particles that are shaped and fired in a kiln at very high temperatures.

This process creates a durability and resiliency that is unmatched by most other flooring surfaces. When glazed, they also have a protective barrier from dirt, water, stains, and chemicals, making them even more impervious to the elements. Even while easy to maintain, there are some steps to take to ensure that it remains in optimal condition.

Powerful-Steam-Cleaning-Truck-mounted-Machines-in-Orange County CA

Pacific utilizes the most cutting-edge custom Steam Cleaning Units available in the market today!
Comparison of Portable and Truck Mount Carpet Cleaning Machines

There are two types of carpet cleaning machines that professionals use to clean your carpets with the hot water extraction method — the portable and the truck mount.

The portable hot water extraction machine is just that: portable. They are small enough to be wheeled around and carried. Professional carpet cleaners use portable carpet cleaning machines in hard to reach places. They also use them in high rise buildings where hoses from a machine outside cannot reach.

Portable hot water extractors have a tank that is filled with water and cleaning solution. Some portable machines also have a built-in heater, which can heat the rinse water to high temperatures. The portable machine has fairly short hoses. So, your professional cleaner has to move the machine with them as they move throughout your house.

When a professional carpet cleaner uses a portable machine to clean your carpets, it is definitely effective. However, there are some drawbacks to portable carpet cleaning machines.

First, the tank on the portable machine is fairly small. Your carpet cleaning professional will have to refill the tank with clean water and solution and empty the waste tank several times throughout the cleaning. The portable hot water extractor usually holds about 10 gallons, which will on average clean 1-2 rooms.

Second, some portable carpet cleaning machines do not come with a built-in heater. This means that the water in the machine will only be as hot as it was when it came out of your tap. As the water sits in the tank of the portable carpet cleaning machine, it will cool down. So, the professional cleaner must work quickly to maximize the hot water temperature. They may need to refill the tank frequently to maintain the water temperature as well.

Third, portable carpet cleaning machines leave your carpet more wet than more powerful machines. Because they are portable, these machines are limited in their heft and power. Because of this, they are also limited in the amount of suction they provide. Less suction means more moisture from the cleaning process stays in your carpet. More moisture means your carpet will take longer to fully dry.

Again, when a professional cleans your carpet with a portable hot water extraction machine, it is effective. However, there are drawbacks to the portable machines.

The other type of hot water extraction carpet cleaning machine is a truck mount machine. Truck mount hot water extractors are the best tools in carpet cleaning. Truck mount machines are just that: mounted in your carpet cleaner’s truck. The machine stays in the truck throughout the cleaning process. Your carpet cleaner connects hoses to the machine and brings these clean hoses into your house to clean your carpets.

There are two major advantages to the truck mount hot water extraction machines.

First, truck mount machines have the ability to heat the cleaning water up to 230º and keep it at that temperature throughout the cleaning! The truck mount machine uses an extremely powerful gas engine to heat the water. This hot water is absolutely crucial to achieving a heavy-duty clean! The difference between cleaning with water that is 230º and with water that is, let’s say 120º (your hot tap water temperature), is incredible. Properly heated water is one of the keys to a super clean carpet.

The second major advantage of truck mount carpet cleaning machines is their incredible suction power. Your professional carpet cleaner will use the high powered vacuum hose to remove the cleaning solution, water, and soils from your carpet. The truck mount machine deposits all of this in the recovery tank inside the carpet cleaning truck. This strong suction, again provided by the powerful gas engine, helps remove as much moisture from your carpet as possible. Removing this moisture cuts down on the drying time for your carpet.

The truck mount carpet cleaning machines provide a deeper clean and a faster drying time and more cost effective than the portable hot water extraction machines. In the hands of a skilled professional carpet cleaner, both types of machines are effective. However, if you have a choice between hiring a cleaner with a portable machine and hiring a cleaner with a truck mount machine, the truck mount is the way to go!
