How To Clean And Polish Marble Floors

Tips On Cleaning And Polishing Your Marble Floors

In my opinion, marble is one of the most beautiful materials you can ever have incorporated into your home decor – with proper care and maintenance, it will maintain its pristine condition throughout the life of the home. It will always add value both in visual appeal and in financial worth.

In order to know the “how and why” that upkeep of marble is so important, you need to know a little about its origin. No. It’s not decayed jungle flora a hundred-million years ago, changed by pressure and heat into some lovely expensive, light refracting gemstone!

Marble is rock that is actually formed by sea shell deposits billions of years ago. In the areas or regions where marble is now mined, the miners also find fossils of sea creatures along with chunks of limestone which is also a by-product of sea shells. More evidence that the oceans once covered the earth? I think so!

In early civilization, marble was sought after for it’s durability and beauty, plus the added bonus that it was more amenable to carve into shapes for bricks and statues!

How To Clean Marble

Because marble basically is made of sea shells (calcium carbonate) cleaning compounds that contain acid will destroy it. The acid will find its way under the highly buffed polish or finish, get into the cracks the porous rock, and you’ll eventually wind up with a big pile of white sand. A common household cleaning agent that contains acid is …. Vinegar! NEVER CLEAN MARBLE WITH VINEGAR!

A good way to perk up a marble counter or coffee table is to start by washing it with a clean soft cloth dipped in a special solution. Use 3 tablespoons of baking soda to 1 quart of warm water. Dip the cloth into the solution, wet thoroughly, then wring out and wipe all over the marble. You may use a little elbow grease on stubborn spots but do not use an abrasive cleaner (such as Comet, or a scrubber). Allow it to air dry for at least a couple of hours, then wipe with clear water to rinse. Grab a clean soft absorbent cloth and dry it off.

To give marble a quick shine, try crushing a child’s stick of common white chalk into a fine powder. Dampen a clean white wash rag and dip it into the chalk powder. Rub it on the marble with smooth, overlapping back and forth strokes. Allow to dry for a moment, then rinse with fresh water on a damp rag, and dry thoroughly.

Taking Care Of Polished Marble Floors

As with most highly polished stones (excluding diamond), marble will scratch. You don’t want that to happen so take a few precautions with your other furniture and – the other residents of your home.

Keep furniture from scratching the marble surface by placing them on rugs or carpets. If that’s not feasible, be sure to use pads or furniture protectors under the feet of the tables, chairs, or china cabinets. These products are available in various sizes and dimensions at most hardware stores. It’s also possible to cut felt pads and glue that onto the bottom of the furniture. That way, if you need to move a heavy chair, it will not scratch the surface of the marble, and you’ll be able to easily push it to its new position.

Use dust mops – not brooms – to sweep up surface dirt or dust from marble. Spay with dust mops with anti-static spray so they will more easily attract and hold the dust particles.

When the marble needs a “mopping”, use a clean, new sponge mop dipped in fresh clean water. Squeeze out as much water as possible and lightly damp mop the whole surface of the marble floor. You’ll need to dip your mop frequently into the clean water and rinse out the dirt. Don’t use this sponge mop for any other floors, except the marble floors.

Don’t leave water on the surface of the marble when you are through damp mopping. Use either clean terrycloth towels or soft paper towels to wipe up the moisture from the whole surface of the floor. After the floor is completely dry, you may buff it with dry paper towels to restore the shine.

Spot Cleaning Marble Floors

Occasionally, there will be small stains either on your marble counter top or on your floor. You may not have the time to do a thorough cleaning or mopping but, if you use caution, you may make short work of stains before they are set in.

  1. For sugar based stains, moisten a household sponge in warm water that has a few drops of liquid dish detergent added. Scrub the spot, rinse well with clean water, and dry with a paper towel.
  2. For dropped on food stains (tomato sauces, sauces with oil) , get to it quickly with a household sponge dipped in warm, soapy water, with a little hydrogen peroxide added. Rub first, then flood the stain, and immediately wipe up excess water. Repeat.
  3. As with all stains, we recommend quick action before the stain is absorbed and dries on your marble floor.

The Myth that Professional Carpet Cleaning is Expensive in Orange County CA

Simply put, having your carpets professionally cleaned on a regular basis is a smart way to prolong the life of one of the biggest investments in your home.

Some folks think that professional carpet cleaning is just too expensive, that they don’t need it, and that it is not worth it.

They are wrong.

How much money did you invest in your carpeting?

Chances are you spent hundreds or thousands of dollars on your carpet and installation. You probably don’t want to go through that process again anytime soon.

The best ways to prolong the life of your carpet are regular vacuuming and regular professional cleaning.

A quality professional carpet cleaning is not cheap (if you’re shopping only on price, you won’t get a quality cleaning). However, regular professional cleaning will always be less expensive and less disruptive than frequently replacing your carpets.

Regular professional cleaning also helps remove soils from your carpet. Soiling accumulates in your carpet after being tracked in by foot traffic, blown around by the HVAC system, or building up by spills or pet stains. These soils make your carpet look and smell dirty. Also, over time, they degrade the integrity and structure of the carpeting. Soils can act as sandpaper in the backing of your carpeting. As foot traffic grinds the soils into the carpeting, those same soils will start to grind away at the structure in the backing, creating tears, wear, and general ugliness.

If you want your carpet to continue looking and smelling good for years to come, professional cleaning is essential.

Taking Good Care of the Commercial Carpet in Your Office in Newport

The commercial carpet in your office is designed for high traffic and heavy use. However, you still need to take good care of it if you want it to stay fresh, clean, and looking good for a long time.

You probably made a significant investment in purchasing the carpeting for your office. It covers a large area. And, your staff and your clients see it and walk on it every day. There’s a lot of traffic that comes through your office space on a daily basis and your carpeting is part of that good first impression you give your customers when they come to your office.

Regular cleanings will help remove soils that build up in your carpet and create damage and wear over time. You should have the commercial carpet in your office professionally cleaned at least every 6 months. If you’re office is super busy (congratulations!), you should consider having your carpet cleaned even more frequently. It’s important that you don’t let too much time pass between each professional carpet cleaning because built up soils can be damaging to your carpets.

When soils build up in carpeting, over time the traffic and movement on the carpeting starts to wear away the integrity of the carpet. This can cause worn spots, rips, and break-down of the carpeting. Regular cleanings will prolong the life of the carpeting in your office because they remove the soils that can damage your carpet.

Another way your professional carpet cleaner can prolong the life of your commercial carpets is to apply a post-cleaning carpet protector. This provides added protection against soil build up. It also makes subsequent professional cleanings more effective.

Between professional cleanings, it is crucial that you have your office carpeting vacuumed regularly. Vacuuming removes dry soils, which can eventually become embedded in the carpet over time and lead to further damage. It is best to remove these soils before they become a problem. This can be done with vacuuming. Whether you do it yourself or you hire a cleaning service, vacuuming is essential to prolonging the life, good looks and fresh feel of your commercial carpets.

The high traffic areas in your carpet should be vacuumed daily. These are generally the areas near doorways and entrances, as well as highly used hallways. Areas near or under desks should also be vacuumed regularly because shoes and rolling chairs can deposit soil and then rub it in as the chairs move around during the workday.

Since each floor is unique, depending on age, type of use and care, we prefer to do an on-site demonstration and test. We believe the customer should be able to see how their floor will look once the job has been completed. This also gives us an opportunity to educate you or your staff on the best method to maintain your stone and or tile. This service is offered at no cost to you. Contact us in Orange County, CA, at (949) 545-5205 for all of your natural stone care needs, including floor restoration.

Comparison of Portable and Truck Mount Carpet Cleaning Machines in Newport

There are two types of carpet cleaning machines that professionals use to clean your carpets with the hot water extraction method — the portable and the truck mount.

The portable hot water extraction machine is just that: portable.  They are small enough to be wheeled around and carried.  Professional carpet cleaners use portable carpet cleaning machines in hard to reach places.  They also use them in high rise buildings where hoses from a machine outside cannot reach.

Portable hot water extractors have a tank that is filled with water and cleaning solution.  Some portable machines also have a built-in heater, which can heat the rinse water to high temperatures.  The portable machine has fairly short hoses.  So, your professional cleaner has to move the machine with them as they move throughout your house.

When a professional carpet cleaner uses a portable machine to clean your carpets, it is definitely effective.  However, there are some drawbacks to portable carpet cleaning machines.

First, the tank on the portable machine is fairly small.  Your carpet cleaning professional will have to refill the tank with clean water and solution and empty the waste tank several times throughout the cleaning.  The portable hot water extractor usually holds about 10 gallons, which will on average clean 1-2 rooms.

Second, some portable carpet cleaning machines do not come with a built-in heater.  This means that the water in the machine will only be as hot as it was when it came out of your tap.  As the water sits in the tank of the portable carpet cleaning machine, it will cool down.  So, the professional cleaner must work quickly to maximize the hot water temperature.  They may need to refill the tank frequently to maintain the water temperature as well.

Third, portable carpet cleaning machines leave your carpet more wet than more powerful machines.  Because they are portable, these machines are limited in their heft and power.  Because of this, they are also limited in the amount of suction they provide.  Less suction means more moisture from the cleaning process stays in your carpet.  More moisture means your carpet will take longer to fully dry.

Again, when a professional cleans your carpet with a portable hot water extraction machine, it is effective.  However, there are drawbacks to the portable machines.

The other type of hot water extraction carpet cleaning machine is a truck mount machine.  Truck mount hot water extractors are the best tools in carpet cleaning.  Truck mount machines are just that: mounted in your carpet cleaner’s truck.  The machine stays in the truck throughout the cleaning process.  Your carpet cleaner connects hoses to the machine and brings these clean hoses into your house to clean your carpets.

There are two major advantages to the truck mount hot water extraction machines.

First, truck mount machines have the ability to heat the cleaning water up to 230º and keep it at that temperature throughout the cleaning!  The truck mount machine uses an extremely powerful gas engine to heat the water.  This hot water is absolutely crucial to achieving a heavy-duty clean!  The difference between cleaning with water that is 230º and with water that is, let’s say 120º (your hot tap water temperature), is incredible.  Properly heated water is one of the keys to a super clean carpet.

The second major advantage of truck mount carpet cleaning machines is their incredible suction power.  Your professional carpet cleaner will use the high powered vacuum hose to remove the cleaning solution, water, and soils from your carpet. The truck mount machine deposits all of this in the recovery tank inside the carpet cleaning truck. This strong suction, again provided by the powerful gas engine, helps remove as much moisture from your carpet as possible.  Removing this moisture cuts down on the drying time for your carpet.

The truck mount carpet cleaning machines provide a deeper clean and a faster drying time than the portable hot water extraction machines.  In the hands of a skilled professional carpet cleaner, both types of machines are effective.  However, if you have a choice between hiring a cleaner with a portable machine and hiring a cleaner with a truck mount machine, the truck mount is the way to go.

6 Easy Things You Should Do Before Your Carpet Cleaner Arrives

You’re getting your carpets cleaned!  Congratulations on making the smart decision to hire a professional carpet cleaner to improve the look, smell, feel and longevity of your carpets.

Once your carpet cleaner arrives at your home, they’ll be doing all of the work.  But, there are 6 easy things you can do before they get there to ensure the most efficient and effective clean for your carpets.

1. Clear Your Carpeted Areas

The first thing that you should do is to clear the carpeted area as much as possible.  Things like lamps, plants, tables and chairs all cover the areas of the carpet that need cleaning.  The more of your carpet that is clear, the more your technician will be able to clean.

Your carpet cleaner will let you know in advance what types of furniture they move.  They’ll also let you know whether or not they charge an extra fee for moving heavy items such as beds, couches or televisions.

In addition to clearing as much as you can (or waiting for your carpet cleaner to do it, if it’s included in their service), you should also remove any extremely fragile items from the carpeted area.  Your carpet cleaner will take great care throughout your home.  But, if you have a place to stow fragile pieces, it’s a smart precaution to take.

2. Inspect Your Carpets

Once you’ve cleared the carpeted areas, you should do your own inspection of your carpet. Your carpet cleaner will inspect your carpet when they arrive at your home.  But, it’s extremely useful for you to do your own inspection first.

Take a walk around, and look closely.  Pay special attention to the areas that were hidden by furniture.  Note the locations of the spots and stains.  Even better, if you can remember what caused the stain, note that too.  Also take note of the high traffic areas on your carpet and the traffic pattern in your home.

Now that you’ve inspected your carpet yourself, you are prepared to give your carpet cleaner a tour.  You’ll be able to show them the spots and stains so they’re sure to treat them.  You’ll also be able to explain which areas of your home get the most traffic.

Your pre-inspection increases the efficiency of your carpet cleaning because you can quickly familiarize your carpet cleaner with the unique challenges of your carpet.

3. Plan for Your Pets

Your pets are part of your family.  Let your carpet cleaner know in advance that you have furry children.  That way your cleaner can come prepared with the proper solutions for treating pet-related soils.  They might even bring a treat for Fido or Kitty too.

Once your carpet cleaner meets and greets your friendly pets, you’ll need to keep your pets out of the carpeted areas until after the carpets are fully dry.  Set your pets up in a non-carpeted area of your house.  Make sure they have access to food, water and the outdoors.  Borrow gates from friends and neighbors if necessary.  Or, consider asking a friend or family member to take your pets on a brief play date.

4. Make Room in Your Driveway

It’s very helpful if your carpet cleaner can park their van in your driveway.  Their hot water extraction machine is mounted in their truck.  By parking in your driveway, their truck and all of their equipment is as close as possible to your house.  Parking in your driveway also allows your cleaner to keep their hoses on your property instead of on the sidewalk or in your neighbor’s yard.  And, their equipment is surely safe from theft in your driveway as well.

5. Find Your Spigots

Your carpet cleaner will need water to perform the hot water extraction on your carpets.  If you don’t know where your outdoor spigots are, find them before your cleaner arrives.  Make sure the water is running to these spigots.  If you already have a garden hose hooked up to your spigot, run that hose away from the spigot towards the driveway.  When your carpet cleaner arrives, they’ll hook their own garden hose up to your hose or your spigot and into the machine in their truck.

6. Prepare Your Family

When your carpet cleaner is done with their service, your carpets will still be a little bit moist.  While your cleaner is in your home, they will have worked hard to extract most of the water from your carpets.  They’ll also have placed fans strategically throughout your home to speed the drying of your carpet.  But, your carpets will still need a little bit of time to completely air dry.  Your technician will let you know how much additional time you will have to wait.  They’ll also let you know what you can do on your own to increase airflow around your carpets and encourage fast drying.

You should make a plan in advance for how you and your family (and your pets) will stay off of your carpets until they are fully dry.  Make sure the laptop and is in the kitchen instead of the living room.  Plan a family date night out to dinner and to the movies.  And if you can’t avoid walking on your newly cleaned carpets, ask your cleaner for some shoe coverings (booties).

If you do these 6 easy things before your carpet cleaner arrives, your cleaning will be more efficient and effective. It will be worry-free for you and you’ll be able to enjoy your freshly cleaned carpets sooner.

The carpet cleaning industry is one of the few industries that is not regulated, and also has a very low barrier to entry in that anyone can call themselves a “professional” without any basis for that claim. Yet these are people who come into your home and use cleaning chemicals which can be dangerous if you do not have the knowledge of how to use them properly, and more importantly do not have the right equipment (not a rented shampooer) to remove them properly.

Everyone has heard nightmare stories about crimes committed, about overuse or improper use of chemicals, and exposès on Bait-and-Switch companies who use a low coupon offers to get their foot in the door and hard sell unsuspecting consumers into a bill they are compelled to pay. When you open the phone book you really can’t tell who the great cleaners are, or the ones you would never EVER want to use. The “great” cleaners work hard to distinguish themselves apart from the fly-by-night companies who use unsafe cleaning practices, hard-sell tactics, and sometimes have very unsavory employees.

Your carpet and rugs act as a “filter” in your home for your indoor air. Their fibers “grab” particulates and contaminants and hold them. But like any filter, it needs to be cleaned because when it gets full it cannot grab anything else … and every time you step on a “full” filter you release contaminants back into the air.

Cleaning your carpet is key to a healthy indoor environment, and the EPA’s guidelines for cleaning vary from every four months to every eighteen depending on the number of people and pets in the home, as well as other concerns from allergic sensitivities to how dusty the air is in your neighborhood to whether anyone in the home smokes. A true carpet cleaning professional can evaluate your particular needs, and with the right equipment and cleaning solutions, can fulfill those needs for you and your family.

The question now is how to find that “right” professional … and we have the information to help you do just that.

The following is a summary on how to choose the right professional carpet cleaner. It covers some of the common mistakes made by consumers in choosing a carpet cleaner, and also the four steps you can take to help you in choosing a true “professional.”

We hope you find the information valuable, and if you have any questions please email us at [email protected] .

8 MISTAKES TO AVOID

Choosing a carpet cleaner based on equipment alone. No question, your carpet cleaner needs first-rate equipment. But he also needs something else. He needs employees who are skilled at operating that equipment. Many companies own hot-water extractors, but very few companies teach their employees how to use them properly. The best way to know that the carpet cleaner’s employees have been properly trained is to make sure the cleaner has been certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC). Before you choose a carpet cleaner, ask to see written proof of the company’s and the technician’s IICRC certification.

Choosing a carpet cleaner based on low price. Low price could be a problem in three ways: (1) low price can be the bait that attracts your phone call. But once the cleaner gets into your home, he pressures you into a much more expensive job. (2) Low price can be for single-process cleaning. Rarely does the consumer know what this means and, when told, ask s for dual-process cleaning instead, which costs much more. (3) Low price means the carpet cleaner has cheap equipment, which will not effectively clean your carpet.

Choosing a carpet cleaner based on a single telephone call. Instead, invite the person to your home and ask for a specific written quotation. Then you’ll know exactly what the carpet cleaner recommends—and you won’t be the victim of high-pressure tactics when the technician steps into your living room.

Choosing a carpet cleaner who doesn’t offer a money-back guarantee. In my view, every carpet cleaning company should be fully accountable for its work. And if you aren’t pleased with the job in every way, you shouldn’t have to pay for it. Period. Not all carpet cleaners offer a guarantee. Or, if they do, the guarantee may be “limited.” Ask the carpet cleaner if he offers a money-back guarantee and then make sure the carpet cleaner includes his guarantee on his written quotation.

Choosing a carpet cleaner without getting comments from his other clients. Any carpet cleaner can say anything about his past jobs. And, sadly, some of what he says may not be true. Make sure you ask for references or read comments from current customers so you can depend on the carpet cleaner and his work.

Choosing a carpet cleaner who isn’t certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC). If your carpet cleaner isn’t a close friend, you may not know whether he has the knowledge or experience to clean your carpet well. If you want to be sure you’re hiring a competent professional, make sure he is IICRC certified. The carpet cleaner must earn that certification through study, experience and successful completion of formal, written examinations. In effect, cleaners who are certified by the IICRC have earned a college degree in carpet cleaning.

Choosing a carpet cleaner who isn’t a member of the Carpet and Fabricare Institute (CFI).

CFI is a trade association of carpet cleaners who are dedicated to:

  • (1) honest, ethical business practices,
  • (2) staying current on the latest methods for carpet and upholstery care, cleaning and restoration, and
  • (3) the highest possible level of customer service. You’re making a wise decision when you have your carpets cleaned by a member of the Carpet and Fabricare Institute.

Choosing a carpet cleaner who doesn’t use a truck-mounted hot water extraction system. You might expect this from me, since my employees and I use this type of system. But there are several good reasons. Portable hot water systems are good, but they aren’t as good as truck-mounted systems. Truck-mount systems are the Rolls Royce of carpet cleaners. Compared with portable hot water systems, truck-mount systems use hotter water, higher pressure and stronger suction. So all the way around, you get a much better job. No two ways about it.

4 STEPS TO A FRESH, CLEAN, HEALTHY CARPET

If you’re thinking about having your carpets cleaned, we encourage you to follow these four steps:

STEP #1: Make a commitment to yourself to get your carpets cleaned.

The longer they remain dirty, the sooner they’ll wear out. Industry testing shows that you can have up to one full pound of dirt in a square foot of carpet before it begins to look dirty. This dirt is abrasive and wears down the fibers and substantially shortens the life. Many warranties require at least an annual cleaning by a professional to be honored (check your own warranty to see your requirements, and if they specify the type of cleaning method to keep your warranty in effect).

Another necessity of regular cleaning is to remove the contaminants besides the “dirt” that gets trapped in your carpet’s fibers. The longer you wait to clean, the longer you have to breathe all the pollen, fungus, pet odors, dust mites, and chemicals that hide in your carpet.

STEP #2: List your objectives.

Is the health of your indoor environment highest on your list, so that you would want a company that is using the proper equipment and method to address your concerns? Do you want only the dirt removed — something you could do with a rented shampooer — or are you concerned about removing other contaminants (bacteria, pollen, dust mites, mold spores)? Do you want to work with an honest, reputable company — or are you willing to risk working with the company that offers you the lowest price — knowing that the company might not be in business tomorrow and might not be safe to let into your home?

STEP #3: Ask questions.

The way you learn about a company is to ask specific questions and listen carefully to the answers. Here are eight tough questions to ask a carpet cleaner before he begins to clean your carpet:

Why Steam Cleaning Carpet Is More Sanitary?

Steam cleaning carpet is becoming a leading alternative to the traditional shampoo method. As indicated by the EPA, the typical person can be found inside of their home or office space at least 90 percent of their time. Therefore it is imperative that harmful pollutants are removed regularly. While there are numerous techniques to utilize when removing dirt and allergens, they don’t always leave the same results. There are many benefits to the flooring and the occupants when hot water and steam are employed. With as many as one hundred times more pollutants found indoors compared to outside, flooring fibers must be cleaned often. The usual vacuuming and spot cleaning is a necessary step in prolonging the life of the carpet, but such methods can only remove debris at the surface. Performing a deeper treatment approach will remove the dirt, pet hair, dust mites, and other debris that commonly work their way down further or are dug into the fibers themselves. While everyone tracks these unwanted contaminants indoors, kids and pets can greatly increase the volume of incoming pollutants. Over time a build-up of dust and grime can occur, so it is important to remove this build-up to preserve the flooring’s appearance and protect the health of those within the space.Shampoo treatments have been utilized for many years. The process produces a substantial volume of foam in order to break up the dirt and other unwanted particles that have become stuck to the fiber strands over time. The lubricating texture of the shampoo minimizes any damage to the fibers that can occur from the equipment’s large brushes. This method is rather quick and can be successful when small stains and high traffic areas need to be addressed. On the other hand, steam cleaning carpet utilizes equipment that shoots hot water into the fibers to remove the debris build-up. This heated application  helps to reduce any bacteria, germs, mites and other toxins that are present. The level of moisture applied can be easily controlled depending upon the surface that is worked upon in order to not damage the underlying material. The excess water along with the dislodged dirt is then eliminated utilizing the suction component of the equipment. The depth with which this method treats not only  reduces harmful allergens, it will greatly improve the overall appearance and lifespan of the carpeting as well. Unlike the yellowing that can result from  many brighteners, there is  little chance of discoloration when hot water and steam are employed. This technique typically dries rather quickly, whereas the nature of some  water-based shampoo necessitates longer drying time. Re-soiling is minimized as well when the steamed material is thoroughly dried prior to use.The chemicals often utilized to brighten up all surfaces can negatively impact people and pets, especially those with allergies and other sensitivities. A key benefit to steam cleaning carpet is the minimization of chemicals present during the process. In addition, there is  less chance of harmful residues contaminating the indoor environment. The air can remain healthy and clean for those within the space. While such methods can be carried out by the home owner, a certified technician trained and experienced in such practices and with powerful professional equipment can produce better results. Those that are approved by the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration have and continue to meet the Institutes continuing education requirements. When hiring a certified technician, clients can rest assure their flooring is in the hands of a reputable professional.
