Keep Your Carpet Looking Beautiful in Orange County CA

Vacuuming is great for day-to-day carpet maintenance. But to keep it at peak performance, CRI recommends professionally deep cleaning your carpet every 12 to 18 months. (Be sure to check your carpet warranty for particular requirements.)

Seal of Approval Service Providers

Professional CleaningCRI strongly recommends getting your carpet professionally cleaned by an SOA-certified service provider. These companies use SOA-approved equipment and products in order to assure their customers their carpet is being serviced with the best products. It is also the most effective way to maintain your warranty, as many carpet manufacturers recommend SOA products in their residential warranties.

Ask Good Questions

There are a number of questions to ask when hiring a cleaning professional:

  • “How long have you been in business?” The answer can speak volumes about a company’s reputation and experience. A quick Google search for customer reviews can also tell you a lot about the company.
  • “Do you vacuum before deep cleaning the carpet?” The answer should be yes. Vacuuming before deep cleaning is critical and makes a difference in the end result.
  • “How is your pricing structured?” Pricing should be based on the area cleaned, not by the number of rooms. Make sure to measure your area before you get on the phone. Room sizes vary, so be careful of any company that quotes price by the room.
  • “How much will it cost?” When you’re on the phone, get an estimate that you’re comfortable with – before the cleaner comes to your house.
  • Are your technicians certified through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration (IICRC)?
  • Do you move the furniture or should I have it moved before you arrive? If you move the furniture, do you charge extra?

When They Arrive

Here are a few considerations for when the cleaners arrive.

  • Be sure to point out any problem areas, spots or pet stains that need special attention.
  • All major U.S. carpet manufacturers highly recommend the use of SOA products in their residential warranties.
  • Many warranties also require you to check with the carpet manufacturer before allowing additional treatments, such as re-applying stain treatments or anti-static treatments.
  • Finally, wait for the carpet to dry completely before walking on it or moving the furniture back into the room. If you replace the furniture too quickly, rust or stains from paint or finishes could mar the carpet permanently.

Breeze through Travertine Cleaning

One of the most popular stones used for the interior of the house is the Travertine. It is characterized by a beautiful and exquisite aura which never fails to give elegance to a home whenever and wherever it may be made of.

Now you may ask about some tips on travertine cleaning. Caring for your Travertine isn’t really troublesome. It doesn’t require much maintenance; however, improper care might very well lead to the possible damage of your prized stone. When your stone gets damaged it can be quite costly to perform stone restoration to get back to its original form.

What you could do to prevent this from happening is to seal the travertine after installation so that it could strengthen its surface and enable routine maintenance to be easier. Always keep your travertine free from dust or dirt particles so as not to damage its stone surface. If you have a travertine floor, be sure to sweep your floor regularly and mop it with warm water and a quality stone cleaner.

There are available cleansers which can be used to for travertine cleaning, Travertine is an calcite based stone and any acidic product will cause surface damage to it through etching, in addition Abrasive cleaners, scouring pads and vinegar are also causes of etching. It is best if you buy one which is specialized for the travertine stone. If you spill something on your travertine floor by accident, wipe this up quickly. Spills of orange juice or other citrus-based products should be avoided to keep the stone from etching or staining.

If you have honed travertine these spills are less noticeable as compared to polished or semi-polished ones. Also, in travertine cleaning, you should use coasters on all travertine and apply felt bottoms to canisters and decorative pieces before placing them on the stone. If you will be using stone cleansers on surfaces in kitchens and bathrooms, be sure to use the ones which are stone-safe. Those general purpose cleaners for sinks, tile, glass and tubs will only end up damaging your travertine.

Steps to Get the Best Results after Travertine Sealing

At last you have your travertine tiles, those which you have always dreamed of! Now you can’t wait to see the final product of your long awaited travertine interior. So, how can you do travertine sealing? Well, you need not ask anymore since here is a step by step guide to travertine sealing.

The first step would be to secure your materials. You are a soldier of travertine sealers today and every soldier needs his weapons, and yours include a Travertine sealer, Travertine cleanser, a spray bottle and white cloths. After which, you are ready to seal!

The first step in travertine sealing is selecting a sealer which is specifically designed for travertine, or on any kinds of other stones. Be careful because some sealers might damage your travertine. Second step, use the cleanser to clean your travertine tile, again, it is recommended to use the one made specifically for travertine to avoid damage and have best results.

The third step is to use the spray bottle. Wet the entire surface of the travertine tile which you are going to seal. For a few minutes wait for the water to dry before doing any sealing. Step four, re wet your travertine tile with the sealer. Cover the entire surface of the travertine with the sealer.

Step five, wait about fifteen minutes to wipe off the excess sealer, use a clean cloth in doing this to prevent unnecessary scratches on the stone surface. For the best results for the strongest seal, let the newly sealed travertine to cure for 48 hours.

If you’re wondering if you can already walk on your travertine floors, well, yes of course you can, after approximately one hour after your seal. Then again, the longer you allow the time to walk on your travertine floor, the stronger the seal gets. It all goes down to a bit of patience to get the great results after.

Travertine polishing: Make your travertine tiles look new!

Keeping your travertine clean is one thing, but keeping it looking as if it was new is another thing. If you clean your travertine on a regular basis, think about it again, your travertine tiles could get dull and might even lose their original brilliance. This is one thing which you could never return to the travertine stone again! So instead of cleaning it often, why not consider travertine polishing.

While polishing makes your travertine new, how often should you do it? It all boils down to how much they are used. You can polish travertine floors every six to 12 months, if they are in the “walking-traffic “area. When it comes to travertine countertops, it could only be necessary to polish every three years.

If you were brave enough to attempt this travertine polishing as a Do It Yourself project here are some tips: A clean cloth, 400-grit sandpaper, 600-grit sandpaper, 800-grit sandpaper and a buffing pad. First you will have to wipe the travertine tiles you desire to polish. Wipe them clean as not to let unnecessary dirt and dust interfere with the polishing, next, you can sand the tile using the 400-grit sandpaper.

In sanding the tiles, you have to do it in a circular motion. Use just the right pressure to remove only the imperfections on the tile top. When you have finished sanding the tiles use the cloth again to wipe the tile surface. The next step would involve using the 600-grit sandpaper, yes; you will have to sand the tile again to make the travertine be a little shinier. If you can, remove the remaining scuffs from the previous grit.

Finish up sanding with the 800-grit sandpaper, to make the surface smooth. Lastly, use the buffing pad to buff the travertine to let out its glossy shine. You can now be finished with your travertine polishing. You can also use 1200-grit sandpaper after the 800 grit for travertine tiles on countertops and walls.

Tips for Travertine Tiles Maintenance and Care

Here are some valuable suggestions regarding the care and maintenance of travertine tiles:

  • Travertine tile are highly susceptible to staining, and hence, sealant should be applied to prevent any unwanted mark on the tiles. It should be applied at least once in a year. Many types of so-called “sealers” are on the market. Care must be exercised in selecting one. Moreover, a sealed tile surface facilitates cleaning.
  • Polishing travertine tiles is typically a task you should leave to a professional stone company. Do NOT apply any product that is a topical coating to your travertine tile.
  • Clean any kind of liquid spills from the travertine tiles as soon as possible to prevent any kind of damage to the floor surface. If you allow liquid spills to stand on the tiles it will get absorbed on the tile and possibly cause damage.
  • Do not use any kind of bathroom cleaners, gout cleaners on travertine floor tiles as they may have acidic ingredients. Abrasive cleaners or cleaning pads should also be strictly avoided on the tile.
  • The only disadvantage of travertine is that it can become dull when it comes in contact with any acidic substances like coffee, wine or juices. So for better protection of the tiles, consider using area rugs or non slip mats on the floor tile where practical.

Buff travertine the same way you would marble flooring.

Buff travertine the same way you would marble flooring in Orange County CA

Over time, the finish on travertine tiles becomes worn and scratched from chairs, pets and shoes. This leaves the tiles looking dull and unsightly. Buffing removes the scratches and leaves the floor with a renewed shine. Using special polishing pads with a buffing machine is like sanding down all the blemishes and resurfacing the tiles. Because travertine tiles are consistently colored all the way through, there is no need to worry about damaging the surface.

1

Mop the floor to remove all built-up dirt, oil and other debris from the pores in the tile. Suction up the water with a wet vac.

No Matches Found. Please try your search again.

2

Mix a batch of filler compound according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Use the compound to fill cracks, chips and holes in the tiles. Pack the compound tightly into the cracks and holes, and apply enough so that it extends above the surface of the tile. Leave the filler to cure as directed.

3

Cover the doorways into the room or close the doors. Close the air vents in the room. This prevents any dust from spreading throughout the house. Open windows for ventilation.

4

Tape plastic sheeting to any immovable objects in the room. This includes baseboards, cabinets or appliances and is necessary to prevent damages resulting from contact with the buffing machine.

5

Check the buffing machine to make sure it is in good working order. Clean any dirt or debris away from the moving parts of the machine as they will interfere with operation.

6

Install a 100-grit diamond polishing pad on the floor buffing machine. Uncoil the power cord and make sure it is behind the machine. Fill the well on the buffer with water when using a wet diamond polishing pad. Dry polishing pads do not require you to fill the well.

7

Guide the machine over the floor to smooth out any uneven spots, level the patches where you just filled in cracks and remove scratches. Direct the machine in long, even strokes, and do not concentrate on any one spot for too long or you will leave swirl marks. Continue buffing until you finish the entire floor.

8

Change the pad on the machine to a 200-grit diamond polishing pad, and make a second pass across the entire floor. Once done, repeat the process with a 400-grit pad, then an 800-grit pad.

9

Continue buffing the floor until you reach the desired sheen, increasing the grit of the pad as needed. Replace each grit level of polishing pad as needed. The pads wear out over time and will not buff the floor properly once dulled.

10

Mop the tiles with clear water to pick up any dust or debris left from buffing. Then vacuum up the water with the wet vac. Leave the floor tiles to dry completely before sealing to protect them from staining.

Methods of floor cleaning – Orange County CA

The treatment needed for different types of floors is very different.[2] For safety it is most important to ensure the floor is not left even slightly wet after cleaning or mopping up.[3]

Sawdust is used on some floors to absorb any liquids that fall rather than trying to prevent them being spilt. The sawdust is swept up and replaced each day. This was common in the past in pubs and is still used in some butchers and fishmongers.[4]

It used to be common to use tea leaves to collect dirt from carpets and remove odours.[5] Nowadays it is sill quite common to use diatomaceous earth, or in fact any cat litter type material, to remove infestations from floors.

There are also a wide variety of floor cleaning machines available today such as floor buffers, automatic floor scrubbers and sweepers, and carpet extractors that can deep clean almost any type of hard floor or carpeted flooring surface in much less time than it would take using a traditional cleaning method.[6]

Wood flooring

Wood flooring should be treated completely differently depending on whether it waxed or oiled, or whether it has a polyurethane coating.[7] It is important to determine the type of finish of a wood floor and always treat it the appropriate way, for instance it is difficult to clear wood floor wax from a polyurethane floor.

Tile floors

Nowadays many modern kitchens, stairs and bathrooms have tile flooring. Dirt or dust should first be removed with a vacuum cleaner or a broom. Then, a dry cloth duster or dust mop should be run over the floors after they have been swept. In the end, washing and drying tiles with warm water and later a dry mop or towel will cleanse tiles easily.[8]

Reducing the need for cleaning

Good well-maintained entrance matting can dramatically reduce the need for cleaning. For public and office buildings about 80 to 90% of the dirt is tracked in from outside. Installing a total of 15 feet of matting consisting of both indoor and outdoor sections will remove about 80% of this.[9][10] Thus about two-thirds of the dirt can be removed at the entrance.

Homekeeping Hints: How To Clean, Fix & Maintain Tile Floors

You have a new tile floor, and it’s gleaming and gorgeous. Or maybe you have a 70-year-old checkerboard floor that could use some TLC. Either way, this list of tips can help you maintain your floor for years to come.

  1. This may be common sense, but dirt can easily scratch tile surfaces so it’s important to keep your floor clean by regularly sweeping or vacuuming it. A little preventative manintenance goes a long way.
  2. Mop once a week.  For most floors, a solution of 1/4 cup of Castile soap (Like Dr. Bronner’s) and 2 gallons warm water will work. For marble floors, which can dull with the regular use of detergent, try a very diluted, mild solution of dishwashing soap and water.
  3. Another great cleaning solution, especially for greasy floors, is a mix of distilled white vinegar and warm water. Don’t use this solution on marble floors, however, since the vinegar will erode them.
  4. Make the grout look shiny and new. After mopping, make a paste of baking soda and water. Rub the paste into the grout using an old toothbrush (electric ones work great) and rinse off.  If the stains are really bad, you can apply plain baking soda, add a bit of distilled white vinegar, and let the solution sit for an hour before you begin scrubbing.
  5. If you’re serious about your shiny floors, consider dry mopping with a Shine Mop after you’re done wet mopping.
  6. If you have an older waxed floor that suffering from wax build up, then it’s time to strip and rewax it. Make your own cleaning solution by mixing 3/4 cup of ammonia with 1 cup of laundry detergent and 1 gallon of warm water.  Mop the floor with the solution, let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then clean with a scrubbing sponge or stiff scrub brush. Rinse the floors with clean water, let dry, and apply new wax.
  7. Have a scratched tile? If it goes all the way to the white part of the tile, you’ll have to replace the tile. If not, you can probably buff it out. If your tiles are porcelain or ceramic, you can buy a scratch repair kit. You can also try using a small bit of either toothpaste or brass polish. Rub into the floor using a soft cloth and circular motions, then rinse. If the floors are laminate, take a trip to the hardware store and try either a wax pencil or silicone putty to repair. If you have minor cracks in a marble floor, you’ll need acetone and epoxy — try these directions for help.
  8. Have a broken tile? Don’t despair — follow this easy tutorial from This Old House to repair and replace it.

Clean Ceramic-Tile Floors

Ceramic-tile floors can be cleaned easily with nothing but warm water, but be sure to sweep or vacuum first to remove any loose soil or grit. Never use a sponge mop to clean ceramic-tile floors. It will pull the dirt right into the grout tracks. This makes the floor more difficult to clean. A micro-fiber mop picks up all the dirt that a sponge mop leaves behind. Pour the ingredients into a bucket and use a rag or micro-fiber mop to clean. If you do use a rag and the on-your-hands-and-knees method, be sure to wipe in a circular motion across the floor. Don’t forget the cabinets and baseboards. If you have really dirty grout, use a brush.

Clean Hardwood Floors

Use boiling water and two teabags to clean hardwood floors. The tannic acid in tea creates a beautiful shine for hardwood floors. Let two teabags steep in the boiling water for a few minutes. Pour the tea into a bucket. Take a soft cloth and wring it out in the tea. The cloth merely needs to be damp, not soaked. This will enable the floor to dry quickly. Wash the floor and be ready to be amazed by the sheen.

Fill in any Scratches

If there are scratches that stand out after cleaning the hardwood floor, simply take a crayon the color of the floor and rub it on the scratch to fill the gap. Turn a blow dryer on high, heat the area where the crayon was applied and buff it with a soft cloth.

Clean Vinyl Floors

Mix borax in a bucket of warm water and wash the floor.

Keeping restaurant carpets clean presents some interesting challenges. Cleaning must factor in foot traffic, airborne grease and oil and liquid and food spills.

A first step to keeping restaurant carpets clean and healthy is vacuuming. While a vacuum cleaner may not be able to remove particulates of grease and oil that have settled into carpets, the bulk of soil in a carpet is dry soil such as dust, dirt, and food crumbs. High-performing and effective vacuum cleaners are designed to remove a great deal of this dry soil, preventing it from damaging carpet fibers, helping to keep the carpet clean and healthy, and even extending the life of the carpet. For deeper cleaning, managers should understand the four fundamentals of carpet cleaning and soil removal, often referred to as TACT:T: TemperatureA: AgitationC: Chemicals used to clean carpetsT: Time necessary for the chemicals to dissolve and loosen soilsAll four components of TACT are essential to suspension, the process of loosening soils on a surface or a carpet fiber so that it can be removed using a mechanical device such as a hot-water extractor. To see how soil suspension and TACT are interconnected, it might help to examine what goes on behind the scenes when carpets are extracted. The cleaning processAfter vacuuming to remove dry soils, carpet cleaning technicians typically spray the carpets with a chemical, the C in TACT. This process is referred to as “prespraying” the carpets and is the first step in soil suspension. A number of different types of chemicals used to prespray carpets, and some are enzymatic. An enzymatic prespray is designed to actually eat soils. Because the soiling of a restaurant carpet may contain proteins from food spills, bacteria, grease and oil, an enzymatic cleaner can be an effective chemical to employ.Next, the chemical will need time to be effective, which brings us to the T in TACT. Most cleaning chemicals need several minutes to start dissolving soils. For this reason, the technician typically presprays a large area of the carpet before taking any further carpet cleaning steps. Some green-certified chemicals may need more time to “dwell” on carpets than conventional cleaners, and an enzymatic prespray may take far longer. Depending on the extensiveness of the protein soiling, an enzymatic cleaner may need to dwell on a carpet for one or more hours to work effectively. The next step in soil suspension involves agitation, the A in TACT. To understand agitation, picture hand washing. Even with soap allowed to dwell for a few seconds, to really loosen and rinse away soils requires some type of agitation, rubbing the two hands together. The same is true when cleaning carpets.
