Do a quick online search for carpet cleaning and you’ll find a variety of different methods. The two most common are hot water extraction — mostly known as steam cleaning — and hot carbonation, often referred to as dry chemical techniques.

So how do you decide which method is best? To start, check the paperwork that came with your carpet, with the carpet manufacturer themselves or with a reputable carpet cleaning company. The most widely accepted cleaning method is hot water extraction.

“The high temperature of the water kills bacteria and extracts the dirt out of the carpet,” said Tony Solis of All Points Carpet Care in Mooresville, N.C. “It’s a very deep cleaning compared to dry cleaning.

Solis uses truck-mounted equipment that injects water heated between 180 and 250 degrees into the carpet under pressure and then rinses out a pretreated solution he sprays onto the carpet.

Steam cleaning removes bacteria, dust mites and odors. The most common drawback is a long dry time. Done well, carpet should dry in just a few hours.

“Drying time on a carpet should be four hours, not 44 hours,” Solis added.

If inferior equipment is used for steam cleaning, dry times can take more than a day — resulting in a mildewy smell — and soap can be left behind, attracting more dirt.

“If the technician leaves soap in the carpeting, you can tell when a customer has that happen to them. It seems like, within a week or two, the carpet seems dirtier than before they had it cleaned.”

Though most carpet types can withstand both methods, always follow the cleaning recommendations of your carpet manufacturer to ensure you don’t void the carpet’s warranty.

Some companies charge by the room, others by the foot. However a company charges, you should know what the fee will be before the technicians begin the work. Ask for a written quote, if it’s not offered to you upfront.

Most carpet cleaning jobs start at about $79 to $99 for one or two rooms and go up from there. Look for a company with a good history and that carries workers compensation and liability insurance and has an affiliation with an industry trade association like the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) or The Carpet and Rug Institute.

A common complaint, according to Angie’s List reports, is companies that offer a discount and then try to up-sell for additional services not covered in the discount once they get in the door.

“They should understand (what) their bill (is) before any work is done,” Patterson said. “I invite customers to do as much research as they can on carpet cleaning because there are huge differences on carpet cleaning. It’s not just about price.”

Travertine Floor Cleaning – Why so Complicated? Orange County, CA

Oh those Travertine Floors. You are so pretty but alas, you are stone. Why is stone being installed in every new and newly remodeled home? From granite to travertine, slate to marble and everything in between – stone. Oh yes, because you are so pretty.

Stone is like a high maintenance woman. People are attracted to her because of her looks but once you get to know her you see it is not easy being pretty. Nails, hair, waxing, working out, eating all that salad. Which brings us back to pretty travertine, I love the look. Now, the problem – we have moved into a new house that has so much travertine. Entry hall, kitchen, dining room, study, master bedroom, every bathroom floor, and the entire shower and bathtub walls and floor – even the stairs. Those spiffy little cleaners they sell at Home Depot, in a spray bottle, are just not going to cut it at five to seven dollars a pop – we’ll be buying them weekly (you know, if I actually cleaned all of this travertine…at one time…weekly)!  So what is a thrifty homemaker to do?  Internet research, of course.

The real problem in cleaning natural stone is in it’s nature.  Stone is porous.  Granite is really hard, but still porous.  It, and other natural stones, suck up liquid like a sponge.  So, the solution is that you seal stone.  Good job!  Research over!  Seal it and clean it with whatever is handy. Sealants wear off and depending how often your stone is used and to what degree you may need to reseal from every six months to every two years.   And, the big kicker, is that even a properly sealed stone may still stain (a.k.a. suck up that wine you spilled and leave a red spot for all of eternity).  So, perhaps a five dollar spray bottle is the lesser of many evils – like paying a whole ton of money at once to have the plethora of travertine running amok in my house professionally resurfaced and sealed.

For about, .50 cents a sq. ft. you can get your travertine professionally cleaning and sealed! Not bad considering the investment paid to put these beautiful floors in. So relax, call and pro and get on with life!

How To Clean Ceramic Tile Floors? Orange County, Ca

There are several mistakes commonly made by those wanting to clean ceramic tile flooring. Ceramic tiles often have a hard finish on them which is more delicate than many other substances. While certain cleaners may be acceptable for linoleum, it is important to distinguish the difference between linoleum and ceramic; also it is important to distinguish between which chemicals are acceptable to use on tile and which ones are not.

Think about it: dish detergent cleans plates so well, people trust it enough to eat from the surface of the plate afterward, so why not? Adding bleach to disinfect is not a good idea. Dish detergents with antibacterial qualities are good to use for this purpose, also some tile manufacturers make disinfectants which are specifically designed for safe use on glazed ceramic tiling. The bottom line is that no product should be used on glazed ceramic unless specifically designed for the surface; or simply use dish detergent and water. When sweeping, a broom with non-abrasive bristles should be used. Spills should be wiped up immediately; those using a mop to clean the floor should use a non-abrasive mop or one which is designed for the exact flooring substance.
